Eating a healthy diet and taking a walk every day can help slow or stop the loss of bone mass, reducing your risk of fracture.

This month, you can take steps – literally – to help raise awareness about osteoporosis, support those affected, and promote better bone health for all. May is Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month, and the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation is encouraging everyone to “Walk a Mile a Day in May.”

According to the Foundation, osteoporosis (low bone mass) affects an estimated 54 million Americans and leads to more than two million broken bones every year. For older adults, osteoporosis commonly results in hip fractures from a fall, which can be devastating. The recovery time can be lengthy, and some people with low bone mass never regain their previous function.

But there is hope! Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help slow or stop the loss of bone mass and help prevent fractures. Walking is one of the best low-impact weight-bearing exercises to help maintain bone density, improve balance, and support overall physical and mental health, which is especially important as we age.

If you’re looking for motivation to get moving, Inova ElderLink offers a free, evidence-based program called Walk With Ease. Developed by the Arthritis Foundation, this six-week virtual program meets for one hour each week to share successes, discuss challenges, and provide encouragement as you work toward making walking a regular part of your routine. Between sessions, participants are encouraged to walk at their own pace three times per week. You’ll also receive a free walking guidebook and access to helpful online resources. Inova ElderLink is offering a session Wednesdays, June 3-July 8, from 1-2 p.m. Visit tinyurl.com/ElderLinkWWE to register.
